On Monday, 21st May, her Excellency Dr Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, came to visit our school. She was greeted by Mr Paul Sammut on behalf of the Board of Directors, Dr Roseanne Cuschcieri Director in the Secretariat for Catholic Education, Mr Raymond D’Amato, Headmaster, Mr Martin Abela and Ms Janet Agius, the secretarial staff of the school.
The students and all members of staff were waiting for the President in the school hall. The program started with the Hymn “Fil-Ħlewwa ta’ Mejju”. After a welcome address by Mr Simon Camilleri, Luke Cachia Enriquez and Matthew Sciberras, the two youngest students of the school, read a message on behalf of all the students followed by the school anthem.
Mr D’Amato also delivered a short speech. He spoke about the apostolate work of Dun Gorg Preca in the beginning of the 20th century to teach the Maltese people, the effort of Mr Anthony Agius when he founded St Michael School, and the contribution to education that the school gave during the last seventy years to hundreds of youths and children.
After it was the President’s turn to convey her message. Dr Marie Louise Coleiro Preca congratulated the students for being students of St Michael School, which not only educates them academically but teaches values of love and peace in a world which is full of violence. She continued by saying that if only one child is bullied and one woman abused, we cannot say that we live in peace. She invited the students to work for love and peace and wished them success in their studies. Finally, her Excellency presented two books for the school library intended to enhance the importance of reading among the students.
The programme ended with the Maltese National anthem.
Dr Marie Louise Coleiro Preca later had a look at the science projects prepared for the Science Expo. After she was invited for a reception at the Headmaster’s office.
